11/20/2008 - Citations

What is the importance of citing information? Why do we do it?
What if we don't cite information that we use? What can happen to us?

What types of citations are there? Where do they go in a paper?

Read through the PCS academic policy to find more information on how you need to cite different types of information. http://perspectiveslibrary.wordpress.com/adl

Franklin Marketing Agency

Guiding Questions:

How has my understanding of the Industrial Revolution changed?
What does it mean to know something?
What does it mean to market something?

In predetermined groups (already picked by Mr. Franklin), the goal of this assignment is to market one of the tours that you went on yesterday, November 12. First, you will need to create a tour, find more information about it, and generate interest in the tour by making it sound awesome!!

Resources:
Go to http://perspectiveslibrary.wordpress.com/ and select the tab, Internet Searching. There you will find web searching alternatives to google.com.
On the same site, go to the Library Resources tab and find a database you can use to find information. I would suggest using ABC-Clio!

Mr. Franklin's thoughts: The idea behind this assignment is that I want you to do the following things:
1) Remember what you did yesterday during the field study. This is one of my FAVORITE field studies of all time (I went the last two years!). Putting the information in a blog and getting creative with it will only help you remember it.
2) I want you to start thinking about how people perceive your writing. You are trying to persuade people to come on your tour AND you are to inform people of these places.

What you need to turn in:
1) Blog entry detailing your tour. Where will you go? What will the people say? Create a map and create a legend of what you would say where! This is where you need to include citations!
2) An advertisement of some sort trying to get people to go on your tour. Included must be some tour information from number 1, but you can be creative. Are you going to create a radio commercial? Are you going to create a billboard? Are you going to create a television commercial? What will you create?
3) Works cited page. This needs to be in MLA format! We will go over in class the proper way to cite information!
4) A grade and a reason behind the grade for EACH member of your group.

You will be graded on the following criteria:
1) How well did you inform others of the place?
2) How creative did you get with your blog post?
3) What other information did you find out that you could tell people?
4) How well did you work in a group? (I will base this grade on comments made by other people)
5) How well did you cite the materials that you used?

The project is due Friday, November 20th. It will be your last grade before Thanksgiving break.

Presidential Speeches

Like the two candidates last night, we too are going to write speeches discussing our victory or our loss in an election.

1) Read the speeches from last night:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/us/politics/28text-obama.html

and

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/04/us/politics/04text-mccain.html

2) Think about what the speeches are saying. What does it mean to win? What does it mean to lose? What does each candidate say to the other or to the other's followers? What does it mean to be a good leader? What does it mean to be gracious?

3) Write a speech that is AT LEAST 125 words that you would give if you won the election.

4) Write a speech that is AT LEAST 125 words that you would give if you lost the election.

8th grade blogging!

Congratulations to all of our new 8th grade bloggers. Each week, students will be adding to their blogs. They are trying to connect information that they find on the internet to what they are learning in class. The first couple weeks will be Science, but we will get into other subjects as the year progresses.

Here are a list of students that have created blogs so far:
